Jeffrey Herlings claimed his second career MX2 Grand Prix win in Kegums, Latvia after he beat Ken Roczen and Steven Frossard in a dramatic three-way battle for the second moto of the Latvian GP.
Championship leader Marvin Musquin crashed on the second moto but recovered well to finish fourth overall. In the MX1 class, Tony Cairoli trailed Clement Desalle despite winning the second moto in Latvia.
'It felt awesome to be back on top again' – Herlings
Dutchman Herlings started strongly in the first moto of the day in Kegums, snatching the lead from holeshotter Musquin. However he was unable to maintain his challenge and slipped to third behind team-mate Musquin, and Roczen.
The second moto would prove a different story for the 15-year-old though. Herlings reclaiming the lead from Frossard before coming out on top of a three-way battle that also included Roczen to take the moto and the overall win.
And after a few difficult weeks, the Dutchman was glad to be back to winning ways. “I’m really satisfied with my weekend. I’ve had my ups and downs this season. I started really good in the first five rounds then I had three bad rounds so it felt awesome to be back on top again.”
In the MX1 class, a disappointing first moto cost Cairoli dear as he finished behind Desalle. The Italian found it difficult to pass David Philippaerts for fourth, and by the time he had done was unable to reel in the top three.
Cairoli went on to win the second moto in dominant style but had to settle for second overall. The Italian was happy to finish the weekend on a high though.
“I had problems in the first moto because I lost a lot of time trying to get past Philippaerts and I only managed fourth,” he said. “So I wanted to win the second moto and to show my speed and be aggressive right from the beginning. That worked and I won and was second overall.”

Team-mate Max Nagl rode through the pain barrier in Latvia to secure a 7-7 finish. The German – who had to have pain killing injections before the race due to a cracked collarbone suffered last week – even managed to secure the holeshot for the second moto.
