We catch up with freeskiing star Jon Olsson as he marks four years on the circuit with a decent result at the World Cup...
Here I am racing the World Cup and finishing 40th! If someone would have told me that four years ago, I would have been super pumped. Yet here I am only semi-happy, thinking it was just a decent result.
But if I look at all this from a bigger perspective, I will have to say that it's been an amazing ride so far and, while I didn't qualify today, if I can get to 40th place and reach the bottom of the run thinking 'I skied like a little p*ssy' then I think there is some great potential to get where I want to be in the near future!
"If you go for it, DNFs will sometimes happen."
A Swedish newspaper called today a "Swedish fiasco". Sure, Matts Olsson and Andre Myhrer may not have had their best day [neither was able to finish their first run in the Giant Slalom in the FIS World Cup meet], but if you go for it, DNFs will sometimes happen. But a 40th place for a guy who only has done this for four years, well that's not a fiasco in my book.
Technically, I skied well up top in the steeps and, after 45 seconds, I was only a couple of hundreds off Leif (who came 14th) and Marcus Nielsen (who came second at the last Europa cup) - at that race I was three seconds per run out from him, so, if you look at it that way, today was a HUGE step in the right direction!
But then came the flats and my not-so-strong side. I lost so much time down there, skied around and tried to figure out how to get better at it and halfway down I realized I was thinking way too much instead of just charging - not a good plan if you want to make the cut for second run.
Now all the focus needs to be put towards the flat skiing. I have an idea of what to do, but it's hard to change a move that is deep in the bones - but then if it was be easy it wouldn't be as fun!
Overall, it was one of my better days of ski racing so far and now I just hope I get the change to race in Kransja Gora, a hill that I think could fit me pretty good!
I just got to Munich and ISPO where we will be having a bunch of Yniq-sponsored meetings and get the ball rolling for real. Then it's three days of skiing break before we move on to Italy and the next EC race!
