August 10th 2010
Red Bull Illume is the most unique, high energy photographic competition to be exhibited the world over. The exhibition is the first ever international photography competition that celebrates the world of action and adventure, and is original in that each photograph is mounted on a light box to give ‘Illumination’ to the shot.
This year Ireland has been chosen as the destination for the official launch of Red Bull Illume 2010, and the location to kick-off this worldwide tour of images. A private opening of this extraordinary outdoor exhibition will take place at dusk on August 31st. It will draw spectators through a larger-than-life gallery of illuminated photographic expressions, and the winner from each of the five categories and the overall winner will be announced. This free, public exhibition will then run for ten days, until the 11th of September. The breathtaking spectacle of eight-foot glass and metal cubes will light up the cobbles of Trinity College Dublin each evening after sunset to reveal the very best of thrilling sports photography.
Red Bull Illume was first presented to the world on the snow tipped mountains of Aspen, Colorado in 2007, Pete Taras from Transworld SURF stood on the Illume judging panel and remarked on the wealth of industry talent tied to Illume at the Aspen opening, “It’s overwhelming…by far the biggest bonding meeting of the photographic minds I have ever witnessed.” Since the launch of this miraculous exhibition it has travelled the world stopping at numerous international cities.
For this the second Red Bull Illume competition, a total of 22,764 photographs and 4,773 photographers from 112 countries were entered into the competition. After a rigorous elimination process 52 judges have selected the top 50 images, consisting of five finalist images in ten image categories. Once the winners have been announced and the exhibition leaves Dublin it will proceed to travel the world so spectators can marvel at these fascinating images from various locations around the globe.
Paul Sanders, The Times, U.K and past Illume Contest Judge, offers viewers a preview of what they can expect, from everyday Joe’s to art aficionados, when the exhibition is unveiled at Dublin’s Trinity College. Sanders reflects on his experience in Aspen, “The actual event itself was something that has to be seen to be believed - it is without doubt the best exhibition I have ever been to and was probably the most professionally put together judging process as well. I cannot thank you enough for making my week in Aspen a real week to remember. I was truly honored to have been a part of it all”. The Irish public now has an opportunity to experience the wonder of this exhibition for themselves.
Submissions of these extraordinary photographs came from esteemed photo editors and image experts from photography, action sports and lifestyle magazines from around the world. This travelling exhibition aims to honour photographers that evoke the following qualities in their images: commitment, passion, risk, technical superiority, composition, creativity, impact, artistic flair, and overall excellence.
This spectacular exhibition will showcase the best moments of raw action and adventure sports caught on camera in a rare outdoor photographic production. It is completely free to the public and not one to miss, as it is an exhibition you will certainly never forget.
