Bruce Irons, younger brother of the late, great Andy Irons, surfed an emotional Round One heat at the Billabong Pipeline Masters in Hawaii this week.

Irons was on Kauai on Wednesday morning for the birth of his nephew, Jason Axel Irons, the son of the former Triple Crown Champion, Pipeline Master and three-time ASP World Champion, Andy Irons, before boarding a plane to Oahu for the first round of the Billabong Pipeline Pro.

Irons was one of 15 nominated Hawaiian Pipeline Specialists while his opponent Tom Whitaker (AUS) was given the seed of his brother Andy. Irons was defeated by Whitaker but the pair paid tribute to Andy while in the water together.

The event which will conclude by December 20 includes the world's top 32 surfers as well as 15 Hawaiian Pipeline Specialists, of which 12 are event wildcards.

The Billabong Pipeline Masters is the final stop on the ASP Men's World Tour and also represents the third and final jewel of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Now in its 40th year, it is the longest running professional surfing event in the world.
