With the Red Bull Thre3style world final taking place this week in Vancouver, Canada, we spread the word, literally, about the premier DJ battle event.

T…

… is for ‘Turntablism’, or the art of DJing on two decks to you and me. Red Bull Thre3style is one of the foremost DJ battles in the world, with a unique format.

H…

… is for ‘Home’. Last year’s winner of the first Thre3style world final was French DJ kArves, who won on home soil in Paris.

R…

… is for ‘Regional’. Since the advent of the world final (the original Thre3style events were a Canada-only affair) in 2010, DJs from all over the world have had to win a regional final in their own country to book their world final place.

E…

… is for ‘Eighteen’. That’s how many countries had a regional contest in 2011 and thus how many DJs will take their place this week at the global final in Vancouver.

3…

… is for ‘Three genres’. The unique aspect of Thre3style that lends it its name is that the DJs must mix three different genres of music into their short set.

S…

… is for selection, skill and stage presence. To win Thre3style, you need an inspired setlist, brilliant mixing/scratching skills and to make yourself noticed on the stage as well as heard through the music.

T…

… is for ‘Twitter’. Not only does Red Bull Thre3style have a Twitter feed @redbull3style, it also has an official website redbullthre3style.com and a Mixcloud page. Check them all out!

Y…

… is for ‘Yoda’ – that’s DJ Yoda, one of the judges who helped choose the UK finalist this year. "I will be looking for a DJ with excellent technical ability, but it’s just as important that they can really control the crowd and keep them dancing all night,” said Yoda in an interview before the competition. “That complete DJ package is what we’ll be searching for over the next few weeks.”

L…

… is for ‘Layman’. It’s not just the professional DJ judges who have their say. Winning Thre3style is as much about crowd reaction to your mixing and persona.

E…

… is for ‘Event’. Check out redbull.com’s event page for more details of Red Bull Thre3style’s finals week!
